We learned about this photo in my sociology class! Did you know.... the husband had just received a "dear john" type of letter from his wife after being a prisoner of war for a very long time. The children in the family all have this famous photo hanging in their homes, but the father has never been able to bring himself to do it. Sad, huh? But I like how it gives so much more complexity to the picture, and I love how it's taken from behind, as if it could be any veteran returning to his family.
